We recorded most these songs just for the sheer shared love of Christmas. Most of them are real crappy, off key, etc. We wouldn't practice them, and just hit record and roll with it. I made copies and put them in people's stockings. I had just gotten a snare drum with a small cymbal, so we were keen on playing that.
We made many a misteak, but kept them in, because we just did it in a hurry, and didn't really care about being polished. I think we recorded straight to a computer, no mic's or anything.
The picture is from our 2006 recording session. Adam's Room. Columbia, SC.
COME CHRISTMAS - an original song written by Joe, arranged by Adam
CHRISTMAS AT DENNY'S - a cover of a Randy Stonehill song. I wish I hadn't mucked this one up with drums.
DRUMMERBOY - Traditional. We fuck up a lot. The drumming is terrible, but whatever, I ain't no drummerboy.
BABY JULIAN'S SONG - an original I'd written about my nephew who had just been born. I had just gotten this toy accordion too, and I think it's what turned Adam onto picking up the Accordion from there on out.
THE AIR - first time Adam had heard this song I wrote. Not Christmas-y, but still done during this Xmas session, with Adam on banjo.
RUFUS - An Adam original. Not Xmas-y either. I played accordion on this one.
2007 RECORDINGS - A year later I kept the "tradition" going and recorded a few Xmas versions on my own, plus 2 more original Xmas songs, while living in Ashland, KY. Again, put them in a few people's stockings:
MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY! - I had just got this crappy, crappy full drum kit off of Craigslist for like $50, so I was excited to bang on it.
CHRISTMAS (BABY PLEASE COME HOME) - One of my fave xmas songs ever. I think my version kind of slays.
ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH - Traditional. I remember thinking I was so cool cus I worked the "Lean on Me" bass line into it.
FRANK CAPRA'S JIMMY THE RAVEN - Another original, Christmas-y, I wrote with characters from my fave movie ever, It's A Wonderful Life. Adam loved this song.
AULD LANG SYNE - Another fave. I remember a couple years earlier, Adam and I recorded a punk version of this for a short film I'd made.
FIVE MONTHS - Nothing to do with Xmas, but I recorded this song of Adam's during Kentucky Xmas sessions and gave it to him. This was the first song I'd heard of his when we first met that I really loved and blew my 21 year old musical self away.
TRUE LOVE WILL FIND YOU IN THE END - Recorded just off the cuff in a house I lived in on Murdock Ave in N. Asheville, in 2010. Adam was messing around on the banjo, I was messing around on guitar, and I just hit record on something and we just went into it. It's actually a pretty decent cover.
